Remapping has moved on leaps and bounds in recent years. Every vehicle now in production is fitted with an Engine Control Unit (ECU) which acts as the vehicle’s brain.
Like your home PC has software that controls the computer hardware (Graphics Card etc), an ECU also has a piece of ‘software’ loaded onto it. This controls the hardware components of the engine and is often referred to as the ‘map’. This map measures and controls information such as the engine temperature, accelerator pedal angle, fuel pressure and boost pressure to name a few.

By changing to a tuned map, we are able to alter the efficiency and performance of the engine. This process is called ECU Remapping. When a manufacturer develops a new car, they take into consideration all of the conditions it may be subjected to in all countries that they intend to sell the model. In most cases, the performance of a vehicle is electronically restricted by manufacturers and a vehicle with factory settings is often far away from the engine’s true performance potential. This means instead of optimising the ECU’s ‘map’ to deliver the best performance/fuel efficiency, they have to make compromises taking into account a number of differing operating conditions. These could include sub-standard fuel quality, extremes in temperature and altitude.
Manufacturers are known to deliberately limit the performance of their cars so they can release more powerful models with just a few software changes. As a result, they charge a much higher price. An example of this is the Ford Transit Custom which is made with 100HP, 125HP & 155HP. Each version has exactly the same engine. This means that all 3 are capable of being Remapped to produce 180HP.
Remapping is a completely safe process. It gives the vehicle the performance it should have had in the first place. Every engine has its own unique map. By adjusting this we can fine tune its characteristics, unlocking more power and in many cases improve fuel efficiency. In the UK, we are fortunate to have good quality fuel and a good servicing regime. We do not have to cope with extreme environmental conditions and this allows us to tune your engine to make huge improvements.
Remapping carries many benefits. It will not only improve the engine’s power and torque but also sharpen the throttle response and widen the power-band. This results in a smoother and more linear power delivery improving drivability. ECU Remapping will often reduce fuel consumption due to the extra torque available low in the rev range. This extra torque means that you will require less throttle input to maintain speeds. This allows you to drive in a higher gear at a slower speed as well as helping significantly when fully laden, towing or on gradients. The extra power and torque will also allow for safer overtaking!
